IN TWILIGHT’S KEENING

When winter mounts the mesas
of West Texas and wind chases
tumbleweed through arroyos

I cast my eyes beyond
nearby fences to distant knolls
where lonely bones of loved ones
rest beneath scattered stones
and the keening flute of twilight
pulses with each breath I take

Standing in the day’s shadows
I think about the flesh of my ancestors
peeling from bone and naked bones
reduced to dust by relentless hammering
of harsh seasons year after year
in cycles beyond imagination

I look up the hills toward
the threshold of their graves
and ask whether winter’s dark face
making way for spring’s bright grace
is a promise that brief nights spent
on earth are prelude to another life

TIDES WHISPER

stars
shower the world
with timeless
secrets

illuminate
oceans
for a moment
then fade
into dawn
as mortal creatures
wake

you and i
search the beach
for those secrets

turn shells
over
with our toes
and listen
to the whispering
tide

sharing secrets
